On the evening of March 9th the MMT was visited by the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, G. Wayne Clough, the Under Secretary for Science, Eva Pell, and the General Counsel, Judith E. Leonard. Their trip was arranged and hosted by Charles Alcock, the Director of Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and Amanda Preston, Advancement Officer for CfA. They had an eventful day starting with a tour of the University of Arizona's Mirror Lab, a quick stop at the Basecamp offices of Whipple Observatory for lunch before having any extensive tour of the Whipple telescopes on the Ridge of Mt. Hopkins. Just before sunset they arrived at the MMT where they were able to experience the chamber opening and watch our massive telescope slewing silently into position. After watching the sunset and getting a wonderful explanation of the physics behind the "green flash" from J.T. Williams, we all headed to the Ridge facilities for a tasty meal organized by Karen Myres of Whipple Observatory. The evening was finished off with the whole group returning to the MMT to watch some astronomy in action!
